Just read the review (via my Zinio subscription) which was very
interesting and seemed fair.
KR if you are around could you clarify- what was your ultimate
conclusion about the Touch purely as a digital transport relative to a
disk-spinner for 16/44 and 24/whatever. I thought perhaps you were
implying that it might be as good (excluding effects of hdmi processor)
as an Oppo 83SE vioa HDMI (p. 123 col 1), but probably better than a
straight oppo 83 via HDMI for redbook (p. 125 col 2). I was under the
impression that the digital outs of the two Oppos were the same. If so
have I misunderstood your conclusion?
Also can I take it that the comment that there was no good reason why
the download shoukld be better in 16/44 than the redbook layer of the
disc (p. 125 col 2) was intended to be ironic? All else being equal
there is no reason why disc spinner could recover a better data stream
from a disc (even assuming it was properly inscribed on the disc) than
the (presumably perfect) download file via ethernet. There are many
reasons why it might make errors when trying to read the disc in real
time. Obviously it could in principle do a better job of getting the
bits to the dac, but there is no reason why it should, and some reasons
(eg inherent noisiness of high speed disc spinning) why it might not.
On the contrary it seems to me that the point of discless audio is that
it would be surprising if it were not as good as disc-based audio all
else being equal. Only the SPDIF format stands in the way as
demonstrated by your preference for isochronous usb.
...well yes obviously you know that.
