My experience with TinySBS has been generally very positive. I use a powered Samsung Story 1.5TB drive with 12,000 FLACs.
Apart from a few issues with my library's Album Art preventing a scan I haven't had any problems. I've set the Touch up to use beta releases which has helped. Mind you, without this forum I would have been a bit stuffed. The only downside is the pause when album art is loaded. This does suck. I'm surprised more people don't mention it. (Although I have noticed it while running a server as well..) So, not a turnkey solution, but running a Touch with TinySC is viable, as others have attested. I have gone back to using a server now, but that's purely because of Triode's stellar Spotify plugin.
