Aha, the 2706 is limited to 16 bits and will only handle 44.1 and 48.
The Touch outputs 24 bits from its internal stream. So in order to play
anything at all the underlying ALSA plug layer has to do some
conversions, at least 24 to 16 and if you play a higher rate file than
48 it will also change the sample rate. This could very well be having
problems keeping up with whats going on. I'm not sure what the buffer
lengths are etc. 

I'm surprised this is happening or 44.1 material, I would not be
surprised for 96, but 44.1 should not be particularly difficult. I've
done a lot of testing with both 16 and 24 bit capable USB
implementations and not heard a problem. 

I have a bunch of 2706 DACs around the house, I'll try them out and see
if I can duplicate the problem.
