I want to share my experience as a 3 months owner of a Touch: I use it with a usb powered hard disk, connected only to the touch.
On the disk there is almost 4.500 tracks, MP3 or AAc, with no cover images. There are also a lot of other files (the disk is 400 Gb and less than 10% is free). Touch works fine and until now I've not yet installed Server anywhere. My Hard Drive is a WD essential 2,5 inch drive FAT32. A full scan take no more than 20 minutes, and a rescan after adding files takes 2 or 3 minutes. Never stopped during playng, never disconnected. When I leave the touch on, after 10 minutes the disk goes in stand-by (stop running). Then touching the screen requires 10-15 seconds to spin the disk and obtain album list. I'm very happy with this device: for sure my library is small enough to be fully supported .
