If you look in the upper right corner of Phil's posts you can see he has been around here a while. Probably long enough to remember seeing several "improvements" to along the way. (and an out of control power supply flame war)
As for me, I just remember a Maximum PC article a few years back where they selected 5 different people, a couple of whom were an audiophile and a musician and did double blind testing of compressed vs. uncompressed music. Each participant was allowed to select a few tracks of their own that they were familiar with to listen to. The results were not what you would expect. Most participants chose one of the compressed tracks as the original uncompressed track. Several preferred the lower bit rate tracks to the original track. The part that I found interesting was the neither the musician or the audiophile did any better selecting what was what in the double blind tests.
