Sometimes you must pay for the bottle before you can drink the wine. 

But perhaps there is a dealer in Sydney that will lend you a DAC for
your experiment? Although the Touch's DAC is not bad, a high quality
external DAC will yield significantly better sound even without
Soundcheck's mods. 

(I'm also stuck with wireless at the moment. Even so, Soundcheck's mods
have been worthwhile in my system).
