Thanks for these very helpful replies. It appears I'm going to have a bit of work to do but I will report back to let you know how I get on once I've worked my way through the various suggestions. To answer aubuti's point about clearing and re-scanning; yes I do that but I suspect my fiddling with the tags myself rather than using mp3tag may well be the reason the Touch is not happy.
