Re "fiddling" there's an option to edit tags in dBpoweramp. Being a
novice I, perhaps mistakenly due to ignorance, tried a few tests by
editing the tags. I failed.

I use mp3tag all the time (although by no means would I describe myself
as fully au fait with it). I seem to have no problems with 'normal' rips
but I am failing miserably with these mp3s described in my earlier
post.

I have run them through mp3tag and get the following results (I have
used just one mp3 here by way of example):

Filename column: Bill Haley - Rockin' Thro The Rye mp3
Path column: Path to where music is located for the Touch
Tag column: ID3v2.3(ID3v1 ID3v2.3)
Title column: Rockin' Thro The Rye
Artist column: Various Artists
Album Artist column: Various Artists
Album column: Fifties Rock'n'Roll
Track column: each track numbered via mp3tag wizard
Discnumber column: Blank
Year column: Various years are listed
Genre column: Blank
Comment column: Blank
Codec column: MPEG 1 Layer 111

Hopefully somebody may determine from this list where I am going wrong
because when I attempt to update the Squeezebox Server Control Panel
nothing happens, not a single track out of a couple of hundred mp3s is
added.
