For about 4 months I used my Touch w a Toshiba Canvio 1 TB USB 2.0 HDD directly attached to it w approx 23000 FLAC files which included artwork in maybe about 30% of the albums. The Canvio does not use an external power source as is recommended but gets its power from the Touch. I was able to access my library though My Music/Artists etc. I then decided to setup a network to make life easier but it worked in the previous setup.

It is recommended to not be above 150 x 150 when running in the manner you are attempting.
