Thanks......sorry to hear about the damage....I thought I read that
just short circuiting the caps was ok. I'm not qualified to say if
there would be any audible difference between the two methods, but I
personally just wanted a clean look and didn't want to risk damaging
the pcb on the outer edges of the cap area.

To remove a cap, I placed the soldering tip briefly on the solder pads
on both sides of the cap, and used a needle nose pliers to wiggle the
cap back and forth gently. (like pulling a tooth....ha) It starts out a
bit stiff but loosens nicely with a bit of heat as you go until it
breaks free from the solder pads. It was a clean separation with no
apparent damage. Then, because the gap is so tiny, just put a blob of
solder on the soldering iron tip and placed it into the gap to complete
the bridging of the solder pads. It looks just like the photos from the
other poster. 

Anyway, I am hearing a substantial difference, but I am only using a
transparent and high resolution headphone/amp setup and not speakers.
