No you do not need to remove the caps, but doing the short with chunks
of solder is a very poor way to do it. Solder is actually a very nasty
conductor, especially if you have any audiophile asperations. the best
bet is to make the short with a small piece of wire, soldering to one
of the cap pads, running around the cap (don't touch it) and soldering
the other end of the wire to the other pad.
