I've got a Touch that I've been using to stream 24/96 flac files of
vinyl transfers. I've implimented the Soundcheck's Mods and had the
Squeeze Server configured to do the flac decoding. The Squeeze Server
is running on an iMac and the Touch is connected to the network by
direct ethernet. I'm using an Asus Eeee Pad tablet running Squeeze
Controller to control everything.

I have liked the sound (using both the analogue out and an external
DAC) but the files always seemed to sound better when I played them
directly on the MAC to a USB audio interface (M-Audio FastTrack Pro)
that I use as my monitor while doing the vinyl transfers.

Today I was looking at the information screen for the file being
played..... as displayed on the Squeeze Controller screen.

It indicated that the file was PCM with a data-rate of about 3Mbits
(which is about right for 24/96 audio) but then in brackets it said
(downconverted to 1.4Mbits) which I believe is 16/44.

I went back to Squeeze Server and changed the advanced configuration to
have it pass the Flac files to the Touch for decoding. My information
screen now indicates that the file is Flac with a data-rate of app
3Mbits. No downconversion happening!!

The sound has improved significantly. The sound stage has opened up
greatly and the sound is much smoother. Like going from 2D to 3D.

Moral...... be careful if you are streaming hi-res files. I'm not sure
how the Flac decoding is happening within the Suqeeze Server, or if
there are settings for it, but it appears that it can downconvert your
hi-res stuff to 1.4M. The next DAC I get will have to have incoming
data-rate indicator lights so that I can spot problems like this
faster.
