I seriously doubt that this problem is caused by album art. This is more likely to be a problem with the external hard drive. Many USB drives come with a ton of useless software on them that are causing issues such as these. Best thing to do is to reformat the drive before using it and to make sure that all the special software junk is gone. If I'm not mistaken, the drive should be FAT32 in order to work with the Touch.
