I seem to recall that when I researching the Touch it was advised to not have artwork larger than 150 x 150 pixels if running it using Tiny SC. That is what I did and had no issues such as you describe.
"Please tell me how you got the Touch to "play nicely" with your usb hard drive. I have a 500 gig Maxtor, and have not managed to get them to work properly together yet!" I am not familiar w this drive but it is recommended that one use a USB drive w a power adapter rather than self-powered.
