Most of my cover art is embedded. Sizes between 250x250 and 500x500 pixels, or between 20kb & 80kb. Not had any problems with music lagging while cover art loads. I run a powered Freecom 1GB ext drive with no particular issues. I suggest you look elsewhere for the answer to that problem, ie, as has been suggested, crap on your HD.
