Apologies for not checking in sooner... So...I've been playing around with volume, different inputs on the amp etc. No real difference. Until this afternoon...
I have a Rega DAC on loan for the weekend - what a difference. More depth, more bottom end, sweeter highs. Then I connected the Cyrus PSX-R (that used to be with the CDP) to the 3i amp and that has made another step. Just sounds "better". And I am sure there is a difference because my wife noticed it immediately :) Both times :) Next weekend I will be trying a Cyrus 6 amp and a Music Fidelity V-DAC from another dealer (there are only two proper hi-fi dealers in Luxembourg...) and will ask to have the Rega again for a direct comparison...oh and a NAIM Nait ;) So I think it is a combination of the sound I have been used to coupled with some system incompatibility with the introduction of the SBT.
