Thanks to you both. Those links have been quite helpful. The example in Tobys link is very like my situation, except I would prefer a externally powered Hard-disk as opposed to one reliant on the squeezebox and I'm not really concerned about keeping album art.
The rescan aspect I wasn't really aware of. Is there no way to work around a complete re-scan every time I disconnect the hard-drive?
