If you need something quiet, then I agree with Mnyb and suggest finding a fanless box. That would rule out both the ASUS and the HP models you've mentioned. If you're committed to getting a computer with a fan (for budget or other reasons), among models with fans the noise levels can vary considerably. Indeed on some machines you can even control the fan speed (and therefore, fan noise) via software or BIOS settings. Unfortunately, I don't know if I've ever heard those two particular computers in action. I've certainly never done a side-by-side comparison, and I doubt you'll find many (any?) people who have.
