Squeezeplay and Touch are not essentially the same. The interface is the same, but that's it. And the Touch was indeed released in April 2010 (see http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Hardware_comparison, which also indicates the minimum server version as 7.5).
So you'll need to update the server to at least 7.5. If you do that, the Touch should rollback its firmware to the version corresponding to 7.5. However, note that if you then connect explicitly to mysqueezebox.com that it will update itself again to the current version.
