Ok, I went to B&H yesterday to check out the A2 speakers. Fortunately
they had a set powered up, and while it was not the ideal listening
environment at least I was able to play some ALAC files off my iPhone to
get an idea of the sound. Well, I walked out of the store with a pair of
speakers and the D1 DAC.

I have not had the chance to break out the "spare" Touch yet, but I have
played both ALAC and FLAC files from my Mac with both digital source
(using the DAC) and analog (using the 3.5 mini jack).

So far, so good. The speakers are very good across the range, and the
amount and quality of the bass is really amazing for such a small
enclosure. And they are LOUD! In my 11x11 space the recommended "3
o'clock" setting would blow out the drywall! I am certain that the A5+
would have been overkill.

There is a definite increase in sound quality as the power is boosted,
and I see that I will need to do some experimenting to find the sweet
spot of source and speaker gain to get the optimal sound.

The DAC makes a substantial and positive difference in the sound from my
Mac mini. By switching the DAC power on and off I am able to hear the
difference it makes very easily and it is significant. This weekend I
will do the same kind of test with the Touch, switching between analog
output directly from the Touch and digital output via the D1. I'll post
my impressions.
