I use my Touch with USB drive attached to it regularly instead of the
traditional transport. My collection is in FLACs, converted using EAC.
Even thought the rips are "Accurate" ones, I compared a pair of CDs I
ripped using my DENON DVD as transport and then the same content from
the HDD/Touch combination; result: the CD sounded somewhat better (same
amp & speakers, same cables, even same input on my amp)...
One could argue that the copies cannot be guranteed to be bit-perfect
accurate (after all, EAC does state some level of 'confidence'), others
might say that you might lose something (e.g. timing) due to FLACs being
decompressed before playing, or maybe there is a need for a better power
supply for the HDD/Touch combination ... Whatever the reason may be, the
result was such.
