It's not so much better bass or treble, it's an obvious improvement in
dimensionality as mentioned earlier - it's very clear and very obvious
using a good quality CD transport (I am talking 5000 worth of CD
player/transport here) - but the point of my exercise was to try and get
a much much cheaper computer based transport to sound at least as good
because a computer (a SBT is a form of computer) does not have to spin a
CD and deal with real time error correction. However, it would seem that
you get what you pay for after all (to date - I am not beaten yet).

I have ripped the CD's using dBpoweramp as carefully as possible into
WAV files. Computer based sources have been SBT and netbook using USB
connected to an Async USB DAC (the same DAC used by the CD transport
which also has SPDIF in).

However I have recently been attracted to buy a heavily discounted Onkyo
ND-S1 digital dock from Richer Sounds (40) - so far getting good
results at home. I am streaming WAV files from a PC to an iPod Touch
(gen 4) docked into the Onkyo which totally bypasses the internal DAC of
the iPod then uses its high precision clock and SPDIF feeding a good
quality output to your chosen DAC...

Yes I have dismissed the SBT and general computer for now in favour of
something which is perhaps a little more 'pure' and dedicated in
extracting the digits using this high precision clock. At least I am
still using a computer source.... however I am yet to convince my
colleague when I get round to visiting him again. Let's hope that the
ripping element of this whole experiment is not letting the side down
(if you believe the article, then it is). Otherwise it will be garbage
in (i.e. the original rip) garbage out.
