The BBC high rate is AAC 320kbps/44.1kHz. This was called HD sound by the BBC and user complained that terms which have "HD" are usually 96Khz but BBC replied that is why they used the term "HD sound" which is not used by anybody else. The BBC are always mucking about with availability - the http/AAC 320kbps stream was available to UK and non UK for about 18 months and then the restrcite it to UK only and left 56k/32kHz http/AAC for non UK users. Redcently for non UK they have changed again and enabled the 320kbps Flash/ACC for non Uk but the http/AAC is still 56kbps/32kHz. It is easy to prove the stream by findout out how much data has been received in say 3 minutes from the BBC stream using netstat and then calculate what the compression ratio is for a 16/44 streams vs a 24/96 stream.
