I can't directly answer your question, but I tried a USB powered toshiba drive that others had success with, but it was very unreliable for me as caused a lot of problems. I have no idea why it worked with others but not on my setup. Perhaps build changes in the touch or toshiba drive? When I switched to an external powered western digital drive the problems disappeared. My recommendation is save yourself frustration, get an external powered drive. BTW, my touch running tinyLMs still has occasional quirks, mysterious crashing and the clock loses time. I am thinking of switching to a raspberry pi or wanboard.
