Thanks for your response. What you have described is what I suspected. I have read about issues with direct HDs and definitely do not want to add any complexity. I also need to keep the USB available for output to DAC.
I am not fully across the Raspi or Wandboard yet but the latter especially seems to be moving up fast on the SBT as the affordable streamer of choice on my local forum. Personally I don't want to rely solely on on a tablet for control (which is my understanding) so am not sure if I will go down the Wandboard path. I am happy with the laptop as server but thought it worth investigating using a quieter server device. Since swapping to a Teddydac the SBT sounds pretty good so not sure what more I can get out of it without spending $$.
