Spend as much as you like on Ethernet cables but your network will still only be as good as the router / switch equipment you have. A cheap domestic router is just that - cheap. In UK BT provide for example their wonderful BT Home Hub - its wi-fi is about as rubbish as you can get. I use (and have used for years) Draytek Vigor routers and access points both for domestic use and for SMEs that I work with in this area. I tend to utilise Netgear switches as they seem to be good value for money and rarely fail.
