6V is actually pretty common - depends on what chemistry you want. But a
regulator is a better solution.

Sighted listening, I assume?

For digital devices, batteries are usually a worse solution than a
properly designed mains-powered PSU. In a digital device, the main
source of noise is not the mains power, but internal switching noise,
and a mains-driven PSU has a lower internal resistance than a battery,
and is thus much better at dealing with the switching noise. 

Anyway, I guess that part of this discussion belongs in the "audiophile"
section.
