Yup thats probably the problem. the voltage will drop when on load (Due
to internal resistance) and probably dropping too low to run the Touch.

A lead acid battery has a very low internal resistance and impeadance
(hence its audiophile usage) but a 6v one will go to nearly 8v when
being charged.
I am guessing that the internal regulator in the touch may be at risk at
these voltages so I would'nt try it unless you know what you are doing
!

A regulated PSU will keep its 5v output with wide load variations, this
is why they are used.
