I do wonder how an iPhone is designed in this regard it actually comes
with an USB to phone cable ?
And it can't be designed in such way that it breaks stuff ?

But I to would be careful with an old Touch I would not even try power
an HD with it .
The USB port was originally for a small local library on an USB stick ?
( maybe not even that ... )
