My personal view is that the easiest solution is to run LMS on a
Raspberry Pi with files stored on a NAS, which is my preferred setup (I
leave this running 24/7). You may be able to sort out the USB drive on
the Pi, but power may be an issue.

Probably a wise move to try the hard drive with a single CD rip (if I
understand your post correctly)!
