Totally agree - just don't bother. Just dust off a 10 year old laptop, install something like Ubuntu on it, and off you go: solid as a rock. A few weeks back I set up a system for a friend with a 2007 Thinkpad X60. Runs like a charm completely hidden away from sight. And they're like $50 on Ebay.
