I share your concerns about having a full-powered PC running 24/7. My solution, and that of several other regular posters, is to run Logitech Media Server on a Raspberry Pi 3 which is connected to the router via ethernet cable. The Pi has a pretty low energy overhead. I have my music files on a QNAP NAS, which has a number of other functions such as backup up laptops and so I keep it running 24/7. I think you could attach a USB drive to the Pi instead of using a NAS.
My preferred OS for the PI is piCorePlayer, though there are others, such as Max2Play.
