The sound on my Touch often quits during play, and seems to be getting
worse with age. I use the digital coaxial to my AV receiver.
I found that I can hear sound thru headphones -- and once plugged in the
output resumes from speakers. In time the digital out quits again (this
can be in seconds, hours, or days - very intermittent).

Am I looking at a "mechanical" problem (dirty phone jack)? If so that
would mean the digital signal path is affected by an analog load. That
seems unlikely.

Anyone know the design layout? Could any action on an analog output
affect the digital stream?

Just to reiterate--the analog output at the phones jack continues even
when the digital cuts out.
