The optical port lights up as soon as the unit is plugged in. No signal
or even network connection yet.

But that might not matter. I opened the unit for a look around. I
sprayed a bit of contact cleaner/lube into the headphone jack and worked
a phone plug in & out several times to clean it.

Since then it's been been playing without a single hitch.
It still doesn't make sense to me why the analog output, which should be
in the signal path *after* the digital outputs, should stop the
digital.

Logitech (Slim Devices) wouldn't have taken the digital stream,
decode/convert it to analog, then convert it again to digital for the
coaxial output?
