Final update:
The intermittent buzzing problem is finally now gone, re-installing the firmware did the trick, happy days! This does not make much sense as there were times when the Touch worked perfectly for 2-3 days at a time, while at other times it would start the dreaded buzzing after just a few minutes. A second fault that occurred at random was failure to switch on - resetting to factory defaults had no effect. I reinstalled the firmware as a last resort because nothing else I did worked. The reasoning was that if the firmware update had been corrupt from the beginning, nothing would have worked.
