Absolutely it's required.
Handlers for async data may need to different in a client then for
synchronous. Of course it can be documented that all packets can be
sent async. Either way it needs to be documented.
Much better would be a way of specifing which ones can be sent async.
(And possibly for the client to find out which ones can be dynamically
(for graceful handling of new protocol versions)).
