Sorry for my late reply.

I think the most important part to reuse from AnnouncerPlugin is the idea of event/subscription/formatter/distributor separation and extensibility.

Three of these parts (event/formatter/distributor) I propose to mostly base on existing TracNotification code. (It seems to me the AnnouncerPlugin code was initially based on that but has not kept up with fixes. Innovations like HTML mails etc. can be picked up later.)

That's actually my first set of code changes. [1] Plus the email decoration (most important for email subjects) and address resolving (less important, but could be nice for integrating into LDAP or similar) interfaces.

Subscriptions would be next of course. There we probably don't want to rely on TracNotification a lot.

I have not systematically reviewed all AnnouncerPlugin tickets. I hope we can (at least initially) ignore many issues that:
* disappear because already fixed in TracNotification
* are related to old versions / DB schemas
* remain in external plugins (blog, discussion, account manager glue)
* are in features not initially integrated (e.g. cryptography)
* are requesting new features

Do you have anything in mind that must be dealt with already from the start?

I find it far too easy to stay busy with just minor features and fixes!

And I think we all really appreciate that you do!

I get more excited by the big new shiny things. :)
