Thanks a million for the notes, it all makes sense now. :) I was pretty close, so it didn't take long to handle the backlight connections.

However, it still doesn't work.  Lights up, nothing on the display.

The firmware version is a bit old, but I can't update it right now. What was the minimum version of firmware that supported LCD operations? (I will update soon and hopefully get something on the screen....)

These connections should have a current limiting resistor added in series. At least on the ones I have used in the past. Actually a pot here helps to adjust the brightness as needed with a series fixed resistor.
