No. A null modem cable or adapter swaps transmit and receive pins
(and sometimes handshake lines); it also happens to change the gender,
for standard connections.

A gender changer is a 1-to-1 mapping from one gender to another. A
straight gender changer is rarely (never?) needed with correctly
designed equipment. (The Kenwood D700, for example, has the wrong
gender on the DB9 computer interface and _does_ need a gender
changer.)

If you happen to have a couple of female DB9 connectors lying around,
you can make one with three wires. connect pin 2 of one connector to
pin 3 of the other, and vice versa; then connect pin 5 to pin 5 (this
is the signal ground).

Yep, in that case you want to run otwinconfig to set your callsign,
transmit rate, path, etc. Since you're running a 710 and UI-View
you'll probably be familiar with much of the data on the config screen
already.
