Thanks to Pete and Lynn.  Now I know another place to look for stuff.

I was able to upload my POIs with EasyGPS and then transfer them to the SD card
with POI loader as described.  I figured out one subtlety, that is that you
don't have to load the CUSTOM POIs into the "FAVORITES"memory.  The
wiki describes a two-step process to first copy the POIs from the SD card into
the Nuvi memory followed by a process to individually transfer each POI from
the CUSTOM POIs to the FAVORITES.  But you don't have to transfer the POIs to
FAVORITES.  You can still navigate to POIs in the CUSTOM POI file. The only
exception is "HOME".  If you want to use the "HOME" key, that POI needs to be
moved to FAVORITES.

When I cleared the Nuvi, however, it DID erase the SD card.  Also, setting the
write protect doesn't work because the Nuvi won't read the card to transfer the
POIs with the write protect tab set.  Once the POIs are transferred to memory
from the SD card, the write protect can be set.  After clearing the FAVORITES,
the write protect will have to be disabled to transfer the Custom POIs to
memory again.  But at least you can leave the SD card in the Nuvi with the
write protect set until you clear the FAVORITES again.

I haven't done it yet to my 2 Nuvi 350s, but I picked up 2 SD cards over
Christmas with this in mind:
