I use the SD method with great results. I dedicated a gigantic 16MB card that came with a camera eons ago to keeping waypoints. Because of the write-protect issue I actually keep the card in the center console in a generic plastic SD card holder. When I clear the Nuvi, I take it out for a few seconds to put in the unit, and once they're copied over put the SD card back.
