Drop targets are displayed as bold when hovering over them. Do you have any
specific ideas on how to improve the feedback?

Actually DnD is my favorite way to add dependencies, so I am interested to
hear any improvement suggestions.

This makes me wonder if  you use the latest version. I applied Reinier's
patch that should enable this function. I have experienced some problems
with the javascript updates, so it might need a manual refresh in some
cases.

The simplest way is to use the 'Remove successor' button (if you get it to
work). Otherwise, you can edit the pending item, and clear its "Depends on"
field.
