Re: below - additionally, the 837 provides a PWK segment that allows one to
note that a paper attachment goes with the claim. It provides for capture
of info re: where the payor can find the paper attachment. (If I remember
correctly, it provides for lots of info - like "call so and so at such and
such number, refer to file # xyz" or "attachment xyz is being forwarded
separately to so and so at such and such location"

Thus the 275 transaction coming down the pike (Additional Information to
Support a Healthcare Claim or encounter). NPRM still needs to be published.

This is very interesting, and scary from the provider side. Although the
payers may have to support this, vendors do not, and I don't believe
(my personal opinion only) that it is their top concern right now. If
this is true, it is another example of the "disconnect" I find between
what my payers see as important, and what my vendors are supplying.

Also, many of the paper claims (not just secondary) that we send are
due to a payers request for an attachment. Many of these attachments
(i.e. Medicaid Sterilization forms) do not reside within out vendor
solution, they are external. How will paper claims ever end if
attachments are still required?

Any feedback from the community on the following comment I keep
hearing
regarding Secondary paper claims:

"HIPAA will kill paper secondary claims".

The logic being that with the mandated support for COB information in
the
837 4010, payers and claim processors will be ending support of paper
secondary with attached EOB, and requiring electronic submission.

Thanks
