Hello!

Has it occurred to you that there is simply nothing more
to encode than that 930Mb? Twelve Angry Men is a courtroom
drama with practically no action... Where do you expect the
bits to go?

What are you talking about?? This is a standard size 5GB dvd (yes, *even though* its black and white!). Of course there's more to encode than 930Mb. The vob files I ripped were in total ~5GB. Besides, the fact that it's b&w is totally irrelevant. I wish I'd never mentioned it, as I also pointed out, I've had exactly the same problem with other dvds I've tried _including colour and high-action movies_. Therefore the fact that this particular film is b&w is immaterial to the problem.

What does it mean practically?
- if you set a certain target bitrate and you're happy with the quality of
the result, don't bother if the film is "too small".

No, I'm not happy with the result. The thing is, the first few films I ripped, when I used dvd::rip to calculate what size they should be at the given bitrate, came out *perfectly* the size they should be. Then all of a sudden, the output files were all much smaller.

For example, the maths for 12ANGRYMEN:

92 approx minute film = 5520
1830 kbits/sec = 228.75 kbytes/sec = 0.22338867... Mbytes/sec
Output size of film (video component) = Time * bitrate = 5520 * 0.22338867 = 1 233 Mb (to nearest Mb)

1233 + 67 Mb (size of audio file) = 1300Mb.
Actual output = 930Mb, then 980Mb, second attempt.

The output files are by no means perfect quality, and are poorer than they should be.

I think I will even go back and try re-ripping some of the dvds I did before I started having difficulties, which without doubt will for some reason now end up being undersized (but I will report back). If I *do* have a problem, _then this will prove that something has gone wrong_, as the size would have been right the first time and not the second.

If you're not happy with the quality, try another codec.
Well, as I said, I have (ffmpeg). Similar results ensued. Hence I don't think its a problem with individual codecs, per se.

Will write to this mailing list again in a couple of days, as promised.

Thanks
(When's the next version of transcode due [approximately], by the way?)
