Now, now, there's no call for flamewars.  Phil does have a point--
file size doesn't matter if the actual contents are acceptable (and in
fact, while I doubt commercial DVD authors actually insert empty filler
bits just to fill up the disc, they do use a very high quality level, so
it's possible to re-encode the data at a significantly lower bitrate
without seeing much noticeable difference.

     On the other hand, if you're not getting the video quality you want,
we ought to try and figure out why.  Can you post the exact transcode
command line (and configuration files, as appropriate--it looks like you're
using xvid4, so that would mean a copy of your xvid4.cfg file)?  It's hard
to try and suggest fixes without knowing precisely what parameters you're
using.
