Hello

Well I figured out what was going wrong, and now my dvds are being ripped at their expected sizes once more.

As I suspected, it had _absolutely nothing_ to do with bitrates "being only a maximum bitrate, so undersized output files are almost expected..." etc. etc., despite some opinions that I had foisted upon me.

The real nature of it turned out to be that the CPU of my laptop was overheating. I'd have used gkrellm /etc. to monitor it, but unfortunately none of these sorts of tools are compatible with my model of computer. As I have been ripping DVDs at high quality ["4" for motion selection (?) in xvid4conf, etc.) the rips for some films have taken as long as 10 hours. Coupled with the fact that the vent on my laptop was facing a small enclosed area, problems ensued.

I have now moved my computer to a well ventilated area and am allowing my computer some time (3 hours or so) from when one rip is finished before I start the next, and the output files are once more exactly the size predicted by dvd::rip.

I just wish people could have provided some practical suggestions (e.g. try decreasing the keyframe rate) rather than using this mailing list to bounce insults off.

Yours,
LS
