Admittedly, I am coming into this late, and without having read
the thread, but this sounds like something that would be solved
by using the '-x mplayer' argument to transcode.

Of course that's correct, I'm (admittely) biased in my answers since I
don't like to depend to mplayer (and _only_ to mplayer) for this kind
of jobs. So I tend to understimate -x mplayer :)
