Please accept my apologies for slow response while I tried out some of
the range of suggestions that resulted from my post.

Indeed ProjectX is exactly what I was looking for, allowing me to cut
top/tail and adverts, before converting the Hummy file into an
audio+video mpeg pair. These can then be fed to DVDstyler and the
process creates DVDs that seem to work in a number of players.

I haven't tried DVBCUT yet; as you point out, this might overcome one of
the main limitations with ProjectX.
