Well, using openSuSE these days (since they were devoured by the Novell
behemoth) more-or-less requires hand-building anything to do with
multimedia, as they are clearly terrified of someone suing them if they
provide usable tools. A great shame as it remains an excellent distro in
every other way, it must cause huge confusion for newbies.

It's high time I had another play with Slackware, so I'll give it a
whiz. I'll report back to this thread in case anyone else has similar
issues. I've an unused DVD for 10.2 but 11.0 has been around for a while
now, it's downloading as I type. I hope the installer is a bit more
friendly than the one I remember from my last foray into the Slackware
jungle ;-)

Would still be nice to know if mplayerprobe is used by anyone else - and
whether or not it works as it does for Phil... Anyone?!
