That's odd; I haven't seen such errors myself, though granted I've never
tried transcoding discs from DVD recorders.

At any rate, if mplayer works, then as Phil suggests, you can try using
-x mplayer="..." to read the DVD.  Alternatively, if you can make an ISO
image of the problematic DVD available to me, I'll see if I can locate
the problem (in my Copious Free Time (tm)).
